{"id":2500,"date":"2025-07-21T09:47:30","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T09:47:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/?p=2500"},"modified":"2025-12-17T06:53:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T06:53:47","slug":"you-cant-yoga-you-are-not-flexible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/you-cant-yoga-you-are-not-flexible\/","title":{"rendered":"You can\u2019t do Yoga if you are not flexible"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:25px\">Is Yoga for flexible people only?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people have told me that they don\u2019t do <em>Yoga<\/em> because they are not flexible enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you think you need to be flexible to do <em>Yoga<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, I think that is really sad, and a bit funny at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Funny because you would be waiting to become flexible before starting <em>Yoga<\/em> to become more flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Isn\u2019t that a bit of an oxymoron?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:25px\">How do you become flexible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is that you don\u2019t become flexible by sitting behind a computer desk all day. Or by sitting behind the wheel of a car, or watching television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to get up and move around. As the old saying goes: \u201cUse it, or lose it!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When you were born you were very flexible. What happened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you think that becoming stiff is part of getting old and you just have to live with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That too is a very sad thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Was-ist-Hatha-Yoga.png\" alt=\"You can\u2019t do Yoga if you are not flexible\" class=\"wp-image-2800\" style=\"width:873px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Was-ist-Hatha-Yoga.png 700w, https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Was-ist-Hatha-Yoga-300x171.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The simple truth is, your joints will become stiff if you don\u2019t move. The stiffer your joints become, the harder it will be for you to move, and you will gradually become less and less flexible. During a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/himalayanyogashram.com\/100-hour-yoga-teacher-training-rishikesh-india.html\">100 hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh<\/a><\/strong>, students learn the importance of consistent movement and gentle joint mobilization to maintain flexibility, mobility, and overall joint health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to break this cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The sooner you break this cycle the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be done. <em>Yoga<\/em> is a good place to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>People with arthritis have a bit more of a battle because moving causes them pain. If you suffer from any pain when you move make sure you consult with your doctor before doing any form of exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Several of my students suffer from arthritis, but they have learnt the benefits of <em>Yoga<\/em> and love coming to class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of my Chair Yoga students are 87 and most are over 80. They all love <em>YogaGrin Yoga<\/em> because it helps to keep their body parts moving. As Pat puts it, her \u201c..bones are not so stiff\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:25px\">Flexibility vs strength<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The truth is, before you start stretching exercises in an attempt to become more flexible you should develop the strength and skills to protect your joints first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t, then you may end up with aches and pains that could put you out of action for quite some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Only after you have developed the right skills should you start to focus on increasing your range of movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Only practice <em>Yoga<\/em> under the guidance of a qualified teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure that you don\u2019t over do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yoga is not about being able to bend yourself into a pretzel. With R1 you are putting in a reasonable amount of effort to get that level of movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your flexible \u2018edge\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>R2 is your \u2018edge\u2019. R2 is your extended range of motion. You should be able to reach R2 safely after you\u2019ve warmed up and have developed the skills to keep your joints safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you go beyond R2\u2026\u2026.beware, this is where injury can occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The boundaries of R1 and R2 will move over time. Sometimes you will not be as flexible as you were on previous days. This is perfectly normal. Try not to get discouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On other days you will be a lot more flexible. When this happens try not to become over confident as this can lead to injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are no prizes for being the most flexible, and there are no booby prizes for not being as flexible as the next person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Read More: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.himalayanyogashram.com\/blog\/yoga-help-with-excessive-lordosis\/\">Can Yoga help with excessive Lordosis?<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There will always be someone more flexible than you, and there will always be someone less flexible than you, but this is not what <em>Yoga<\/em> is about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are exercising make sure you honor what your body is telling you. If you feel pain then you have gone too far and you need to ease off a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Be patient with yourself. Another old saying is: \u201cRome wasn\u2019t built in a day.\u201d This is very true, and it is true for you when exercising. Change takes time. Young, old, able bodied, disabled.
